Somerset uses CD-ROM to help develop local e-Businesses

They have launched an updated version of the ‘Putting the ‘e’ into Business’ CD-ROM. An entirely new section called Safe and Legal, covers detailed advice and guidance on online trading and advertising law.

This section is packed with crucial information covering areas such as cooling off periods, electronic contracting and whose law will apply to cross border trade. In addition there is an online trading and advertising checklist, and a useful links section. The CD also contains an extensive resources section with a wide range of information to help businesses launch or refine their online activities.

The CD also contains video stories of businesses who have successfully used e-commerce to reach international markets, drive down costs and attract new customers.
Business Link e-business adviser, Kevin Redpath, who produced the original CD said:
“The online Trading Law section is a very useful and welcome addition to our CD. I hope other Somerset businesses will gain inspiration from some of the case studies and make sure that their websites are compliant with the latest legislation.”

Allyson Brinsford, Trading Standards, said:
“We were delighted to work with Business Link Somerset on this project. The latest national statistics show that last Christmas, in the UK, we consumers spent £2.5 billion online. It’s essential that businesses in Somerset are fully aware of their legal obligations when using the Internet to widen their market.”

Hazel Prior-Sankey, Portfolio holder for Care & Safety Policy Committee commented ”One of the Council’s priorities for this year is to help develop a sustainable local economy and to promote the extension and up-take of e-commerce in Somerset.; this CD makes a major contribution to these aims. This is an area which is quickly increasing as more consumers have confidence in the security of purchasing over the internet.”
