For Paul Kurnit, becoming president of Griffin Bacal was a matter of keeping up with the family. Mr. Kurnit, whose appointment was announced yesterday, comes from a family steeped in the lore of the industry. Or, as he put it: ”We’re creeping all over this business.”

For Paul Kurnit, becoming president of Griffin Bacal was a matter of keeping up with the family. Mr. Kurnit, whose appointment was announced yesterday, comes from a family steeped in the lore of the industry. Or, as he put it: ”We’re creeping all over this business.”

Mr. Kurnit’s father, Shepard, is president of Kurnit Communications, a tiny New York ad agency, and founded the predecessor agency of Calet, Hirsch and Spector. His brother, Richard, is an attorney specializing in advertising law, and his mother has also worked in the business.

”It’s funny to watch our family watching television,”

Mr. Kurnit said. ”There’s often a lot more banter about the commercials than about the programs.” But despite his pedigree, Mr. Kurnit took a roundabout route into advertising - teaching communications and working as a media consultant before joining his first agency, Benton & Bowles. Mr. Kurnit, who has been with Griffin Bacal for seven years, replaces Tom Griffin as president. Mr. Griffin is now co-chairman..

As executive vice president of Griffin Bacal, an 11-year-old agency whose clients include Hasbro and Milton Bradley, Mr. Kurnit was instrumental in opening a London office.
