The advertisement announcing the new president of the Advertising Association of Baltimore made reference to the fact that James B. Astrachan was bestowed with the title because he missed the meeting. Astrachan has a close link with the advertising community as a lawyer who focuses on intellectual property law, trademark, copyright and advertising law. Astrachan recently sat down with The Daily Record to discuss his role as president of the organization. Is it unusual for a lawyer to be elected president of the Advertising Association of Baltimore? I think it is unusual in that it has not occurred, to my knowledge, with this particular club. But the Advertising Association of Baltimore is a member of the American Advertising Federation, which is comprised of approximately 200 clubs around the country and the president of the American Advertising Federation is Wally Snyder, who is a lawyer. How did you get involved in the association? I have been representing advertising agencies around the country since about 1981 and joined the Advertising Association of Baltimore in 1985 or 1986 because it is a trade association that is looking out for the interests of the advertising community so I have been on this board probably since at least 1989. What types of legal issues do ad agencies face? What are the most common? Agencies face claims substantiation, copyright infringement, use of trademarks, selection of trademarks.
