ACS ads prompt complaint to FTC

Aug. 3–Anchorage-based cell phone company Alaska DigiTel has lodged a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Alaska Communications Systems, alleging that recent ACS advertising claims are deceptive and violate federal truth-in-advertising laws. ACS last month began running ads that use data from “drive tests” in which ACS employees drove around Anchorage and checked the performance of its cell-phone network against those of its two main competitors, Cellular One and Alaska DigiTel.
